Founded in February 2005, YouTube is the leader in online video, and the premier destination to watch and share original videos worldwide through a Web experience. YouTube allows people to easily upload and share video clips on www.YouTube.com and across the Internet through websites, mobile devices, blogs, and email.
Who can use it?
Everyone can watch videos on YouTube. People can see first-hand accounts of current events, find videos about their hobbies and interests, and discover the quirky and unusual. As more people capture special moments on video, YouTube is empowering them to become the broadcasters of tomorrow.
YouTube received funding from Sequoia Capital in November 2005 and was officially launched one month later in December. Chad Hurley and Steve Chen proceeded to become the first members of the YouTube management team and currently serve as Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technology Officer respectively.
Where is it now?
In November 2006, within a year of its launch, YouTube was purchased by Google Inc. in one of the most talked-about acquisitions to date.
Do not think that youtube is only a video sharing site. That is the reason I have placed it under multiple categories. You must begin to understand that social networking and learning can be anything you want it to be. Its about utilizing the tools around you to create a learning environment.
Youtube is now being used for social bookmarking and posting portfolio quality videos to extend who can access those. Therefore its becoming more and more a social expansion to find jobs, relationships, or extending the knowledge that you've found, to others.
Youtube has been around for about 4 years now and has extended in countless areas of peoples companies, personal sites, blogs and more! Because the company that built youtube made it available to everyone to do with it as they liked, they have made a success story that is quite astounding.
Its incredibly easy to create an account on youtube, and then you can start posting your videos right away! For me personally its how I keep in touch with a friend of mine who moved to L.A. and is creating films. He posts them on youtube and its easy for me to see the progress that hes making in a fun and interactive way. Got any home videos? Make an account and throw them on youtube so your friends and family can check them out! If you're worried about who will see it, make you profile personal! Its that easy!
